To ensure that students have time to complete the course registration packet and pre-test prior to attending the class, registration for this course will close at 8:00AM EST seven days before the first day of class.

This course is based on the RIT job tasks within the National Renewable Energy Laboratory/U.S. Department of Energy Job Task Analysis (JTA) for Crew Leaders. This one-week course teaches proper installation of products and services related to energy efficiency in existing homes. The course covers residential envelope air sealing, HVAC duct sealing, insulation, windows and doors, mechanical ventilation and roofing upgrades in single-family homes and small multi-family housing. Students will take one written and one hands-on test at the conclusion of the class. Upon successful completion of the course work and tests, each student will receive a certificate of completion.

This course is designed to prepare students to challenge the BPI Home Energy Professional (HEP) Retrofit Installer Technician certification exams and is suitable for weatherization crews, retrofit workers, and those seeking a better understanding of basic building science and energy efficiency.

Course objectives: Understanding of basic building science, proper use of materials and tools, proper use of safety equipment, proper installation of retrofit measures.

Skills taught: Students will develop their skills in basic building science, installation of work measures, air sealing and insulation techniques, safety procedures and more.

Prerequisites: Students must complete an online pre-test; a score of 80% or higher is required for admission to the class.

Continuing education units (CEUs): This course is approved for 8.75 BPI CEUs.

Note: The BPI HEP Retrofit Installer Technician certification is a separate test with an additional fee.
