To ensure that students have time to complete the course registration packet and pre-test prior to attending the class, registration for this course will close at 8:00AM EST seven days before the first day of class.

This course is based on a National Renewable Energy Laboratory/U.S. Department of Energy Job Task Analysis (JTA) of the same name. This two-week course teaches students to evaluate the energy efficiency, health, and safety of a home and to use diagnostic equipment to identify areas for energy savings. Students learn to use modeling software to produce an audit report and develop a prioritized scope of work for the customer. Students will take one written and three hands-on tests at the conclusion of the class. Upon successful completion of the course work and tests, each student will receive a certificate of completion.

This course is designed to prepare students to challenge the BPI Home Energy Professional (HEP) Energy Auditor certification exams and is suitable for those with little or no experience in the field.

Course objectives: Perform combustion testing and calculate combustion air needed; perform duct testing; proper use of blower doors; identification of various heat systems; assessment of building envelope

Skills taught: Students will develop skills in communications, basic math, blower door testing, zonal diagnostics, combustion appliance diagnostics and worst-case scenario testing.

Prerequisites: Students must complete an online pre-test; a score of 80% or higher is required for admission to the class.

Continuing education units (CEUs): This course is approved for 18.75 BPI CEUs.

Note: The BPI HEP Energy Auditor certification is a separate test with an additional fee.
